New Japanese robot Actroid-F 2 was developed by scientists from AIST, Kokoro and ATR. There are plans to supply first 50 robots to museums and hospitals. Robots will be used to greet visitors and look after patients.

Over the weekend I discovered Norman McLaren (1914 – 1987), an interesting animator known for his groundbreaking experiments of combining and synchronizing animation with music on film. Below you can see a few examples of his animation and sound experiments.

The New Bus for London is inspired by the much-loved Routemaster and will use the latest green technology when it launches in 2012.

The Mayor unveiled the design for the New Bus for London in May 2010.

The New Bus for London will meet London Buses’ requirements for vehicles in public service in London, including high standards of accessibility, safety and emissions abatement. In addition, it will be more durable, more fuel efficient and better ventilated. The bus will incorporate a double-deck and a platform at the rear near-side corner, so passengers will be able to get on and off easily.

Algae photosynthesis lamp

Mike Thompson, the arts graduate from Design Academy in Eindhoven now introduces a seemingly unheard of algae powered lamp, which he names Latro Algae Lamp. He takes inspiration from the findings of a research conducted by Yansei and Stanford University scientists that concluded that algal cells can draw electrical current through photosynthesis. The lamp, basically, draws its energy from a glass chamber of algae.

Peepoo bag claims to have a sustainable solution to lack of access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation.

In the world today more than 2,6 billion of people has no access to basic sanitation. That means that 40 out of 100 person lacks even the most simple latrine to perform their needs. The lack of toilets affects both society and the individual through the contamination of fresh water and ground water. Human faeces contain viruses, bacteria, worms and parasites which kills and infects people with serious diseases. One child in the world dies every 15 seconds due to contaminated water.
